The reason
AVG compliance sparring partner
Privacy and data protection had been well organized by A-VISION for years, but there was a need for a sparring partner for complex issues, among other things. “Due to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and our intensive interaction with student data, we found that we needed an external Data Protection Officer to take new steps in the field of privacy and data protection,” says David Izelaar.
David Izelaar has been a director at A-VISION, an educational consultancy that is at the forefront of developing digital, adaptive tests. In doing so, the organization uses its own online test platform (Routewijs). They are not only experts in research and advice, but also offer training courses that focus on a variety of learning and development issues. “If you have a lot to do with students and processing agreements and want to reduce the risks related to privacy and data protection, a Data Protection Officer will be necessary,” says David.

The choice for Fendix
With a growing need for clarity, certainty and professionalism, Fendix came into the picture at A-VISION. Hiring someone part-time or full-time for this role was not an option and hiring an external employee is also cheaper. First, A-VISION achieved her ISO 27001:2017 certificate already with the help of Fendix. Privacy and data protection were also important issues back then. The organization had arranged this well for years, but there was a need for external expertise to make a professionalization move.
“The added value of an external Data Protection Officer is that you have a specialized sparring partner who can answer issues and monitor the process,” explains David. And luckily, Fendix offers “Specialism as a Service” in the form of interim positions, including the Data Protection Officer position. “It was important for us to stop filling this position internally, in order to guarantee impartiality and clarity. In addition, continuity is a factor that should not be underestimated,” says David.

The results
The role of the Data Protection Officer
The FG of Fendix started in June 2023 and the cooperation is going smoothly. “The Data Protection Officer ensures that we stay focused on the topic of “privacy” every month. The external perspective also provides something extra, because the internal processes are being improved,” says David. For example, the DPO, in cooperation with internal employees, has, among other things, set up a clear structure and implemented measurement methods, including regular sampling.
Since the appointment of the Data Protection Officer, A-VISION has not only had an extra stick to take the topic seriously, but also a clear person responsible for contact with the Data Protection Authority and other important stakeholders. “It gives us the space to address problems effectively and correctly, which is essential in our industry,” emphasizes David.
